In loving memory of Loy Crapo

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Loy Crapo, 64, passed away suddenly on May 29, 2011, surrounded by family.  Loy was born June 11, 1946 in Roosevelt, Utah to James Delbert Crapo and Blanch Syrelda Works Crapo.
Loy was raised in Fillmore, Utah and was the youngest of five children.   He grew up helping his dad with logging and farming.  He was very athletic, playing many sports including wrestling and football at Millard High school.  After graduation, he served his country in the National Guard and later graduated from Utah Technical College.  He married his sweetheart, Althea Beth Holman, on August 26, 1966 in the Manti LDS Temple.  Loy and Althea later moved to Delta, Utah where they raised their family.
Loy and Althea worked side by side for many years developing a successful rock and fossil business. He had an amazing work ethic and was known for the high quality of his products. He loved his career and enjoyed interacting with his many friends in the rock and fossil business. He was very well respected amongst his business colleagues.
Loy was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  He adored his sweet wife and never let a day pass without telling her he loved her.  He was a loving, kind, selfless father who was so supportive of each of his children.  He is our best friend.  He was also a fun grandpa who adored his grandchildren and cherished his time with them.  They will forever miss shoulder rides and steam roller.  He was so proud of them all!  All the grandchildren like being at their grandparent’s home more than their own.  In fact, very seldom will a day pass when they are not over at grandma and grandpas, eating, playing with friends, building projects, riding 4-wheelers, gathering eggs, hanging out, and listening to grandpa’s stories.   Loy and Althea have created an atmosphere of love in their home which fostered tight-knit relationships with the entire family, making grandpa’s house a place where everyone wants to be.
Dad is committed to his church and God and had great faith in Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the eternal plan.  He had many church callings in his life and always fulfilled them faithfully.
Dad built his own home and could fix anything.  He had a good singing voice, loved to hunt and spend time with his family.  He spent his life serving and helping anyone at any time.   He has forever impacted the lives of everyone who knew him.   He is a wonderful, noble, hard-working, honest man who passed too soon-- leaving a void which will never be filled.  Words cannot express how much we will miss him in our day to day lives.
He is survived by his loving wife, Althea, and six children:  Shayne (Carrie) Crapo, Kristi (Bill) Owens, Gina (Russ) Henrie, Amber (Van) Beckstrom, Wade (Nancy) Crapo, Rhett (Jessica) Crapo and 19 grand-children; his siblings:  Cleed (Janet) Crapo, Shauna (Marshall) Eastman, Trent (Vicki) Crapo, and Kent (Donna) Crapo.  Proceeded in death by parents, Delbert and Syrelda Crapo; parents in-law, Earl and Lilac Holman, and grandson Tyson Owens.
A viewing will be held at the Nickle Mortuary (190 S Center in Delta, UT) on Friday, June 3rd, 2011 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 4th, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Delta Stake Center (125 S White Sage Ave., Delta, UT) with a viewing prior to the funeral from  9:30 to 10:30 am.  Online condolences may be offered at www.loycrapo.blogspot.com.

  1. I am truly saddened to hear of Loy's passing away this past weekend. My thoughts and prayers are with all his family members through this time of grief.

Loy has played such an instrumental part in the lives of so many people from around the country.
For the past 10 years, I have been bringing our groups of Road Scholar (Elderhostel) participants from around the country to Delta for a week-long Rock Hounding experience with Loy.

I join with hundreds of our past Road Scholar (Elderhostel) participants in saying thanks for all Loy has done in touching our lives and making them better.

His graciousness and kindness towards all means so much as he has shared so many stories of his life, family and his knowledge of Rock Hounding. These stories are immeasurable and will remain with us forever.

May God bless Loy as he enters Rock Hounding Heaven and may God bless all of us as his friends, who are left behind, that we might emulate Loy’s example of kindness, fairness and love for everyone we come in contact with.

    Sincerely,
    Gary Nielsen,
    Friend & Business Partner

  2. I am very sorry to hear the passing of Loy. He is a truly a great friend and a hard worker. We, my husband and I, have known him and his wife for ten years. He helped us with our Road Scholar, (known as Elderhostel), Rock Hounding Programs by providing our group access to U-Dig Fossils to dig up some trilobites, Topaz Mountain to find topaz crystals, pick up some geodes, agate & jaspers, and wonder stones. Over the years, our group and we really appreciated for him doing this for them and us. The last time he done this for us was earlier this month, (May 1-7, 2011), that was the last time we had seen him. Thank you Loy, we are going to miss your friendship and all the wonderful things you do, and for every life you've touched. My blessings go out to all the families and friends and hope that all is well. May the Lord bless you all, from a loving friend, Sandy Nielsen.

  6. Loy made every outing an adventure. His kindness and integrity made me say just last month, "That's one man with a rich, wonderful life. He's rich in a way that has nothing to do with dollars, and everything to do with his own peace of mind." Even though I saw him fairly infrequently, it always felt like being with a favorite friend. As he opened the cut geodes for every person in our group, he'd lift his eyebrows and smile, making all of us feel like our own geode could be a real treasure. He had a knack for enjoying whatever circumstances came up. When I asked him how on earth to dress for the crazy Spring weather, he said, "Oh, it's best to just get a little wet if it's raining, and not mind too much. I never cancel something good for a little weather". What a great approach to life! Kathleen Pribyl, friend and Road Scholar Coordinator.

  7. Loy was a true and loyal friend. Loy, Craig Bartholomew, Richard Monson and I (Tom Melville)were best friends. I remember Loy telling us once that his brother's names (Kent and Trent)were Jesse James Crapo and James Jesse Crapo. We thought that was fine to be named after the bandit Jesse James. I spent many hours hauling hay with Kent, Trent, and Loy. He had no vices. I am sure he was welcomed home with the comment, "well done thou good and faithful servant." Tom Melville

  8. I went back to my Millard High year books for the fond memories of Loy. He was always kind and it sounds like he lived his entire life with honor and respect for his family and all those he came in contact with. I remember Loy, Tom, Richard and Craig being good friends and full of fun. I agree with Tom, that he was welcomed home with elation. MaryLois (Dallas) Kuhn

  9. I've always looked up to Loy. I remember the first time I met him. My immediate impression was that he was a man of patience, love, and strength. He showed patience as he taught me how to polish Septarian slabs. He showed love as he would spend time with his grandchildren, and you could feel his strength each time you shook his hand. Loy Crapo will be missed, but he'll always live on in the hearts of those who were fortune enough to have met him. Loy, Thank You for being such an influential figure in my life.

  10. I interacted with Loy on many occasions and he was always instrumental in teaching me and helping me with my many rock projects. Besides being a great friend, I was always amazed at his abilities to do the things he did with his mining ventures and rock business. He was such a hard worker and honest person. Someone, anyone would be proud to know! I know I will sincerely miss him as I always look forward to seeing him and catching up with our adventures. He has such a wonderful family and they will hopefully be able remember all the great things he brought us! Kindest thoughts to your family at this hard time. Tom

  11. When my family first moved to Delta in 1985 Loy and I served in the Delta 8th ward bishopric together. I have always loved his sweet spirit and enjoyed being around him and visiting with him and his family. I have often thought what a choice family he has had and all are so good looking and faithful. He truely was a great patriarch to his family. I loved going with him just to learn a little about the west desert area. I don't think there was anyone who knew it better. His lovely wife has always been there by his side and comes from the best people I have been privileged to know in Delta. Each one of his posterity are successful and leading out in the community. We all lost a great friend that we will miss until we meet again. May the Lord continue to bless this great family as they now enter this new challenge in life. God bless all of you!

  13. I first met Loy shortly after the big Oak City fire. We have some pasture property in Fool Creek which burned in this fire. Loy's ward was assinged to help rebuild our fence and with his leadership and organization we soon had the fence back in good shape. Then as the years went by Julie and I spent alot of time at Wrestling and football activities with the Crapo family. With our son Dallin and Rett being the same age we seen alot of Wrestling matches together from Little League through High School. We have not been around Loy as much since our kids are no longer in school but, we have alot of good memories of our associations with Loy and his family. We will always have the good memories of this patient kind friend until we meet again (I know that we can be together again). Our thoughts and prayers will be with you as you deal with your loss. Just remember this is not the end but just the next phase in our Father in Heaven's plan.
May God be with you and bless you as a family.

  17. As others have said on this wall, Loy was a Great friend and business associate. We only saw Loy a few times a year but we always looked forward to visiting with him at shows and enjoyed his visits to our shop as well. We were shocked and saddened when we heard of his death and we will miss him greatly. I doubt we will ever see a septarian nodule without thinking of Loy. Our thoughts & prayers are with his family.
    Sincerely

  18. Loy was a big influences in my life. I had priviledge of working for him several years growing up in high school and in college digging trilobites and geodes and spending countless hours cutting bookends in his shop. He was the ultimate example of a hard working family man that influenced all around him with his gentle manner. He will be greatly missed.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family

  19. I was overseas for over a month and only just heard of his passing. I am very saddened to hear of his demise.

Loy was the most honest businessman that I have ever interacted with, and was a very positive influence on me early in my fossil career. He was always willing to give freely of his time and advice during my early digging days in the deserts of the Southwest. No favor was ever refused, and his generosity will be remembered forever.

Men like Loy are what truly make America great: Honest, hard working men who care nothing about fame or the trappings of success, but only about doing the best job they could so they could earn well enough to provide a good life for their families.

My heartfelt condolences go out to his family.
